It looks like next year Ontario, Canada will have a pesticide ban. I think this decision is politically driven and in my opinion a little outlandish. With that side, I am not totally against there being some kind of limitations on the use of the products because I am sure most of the time they are not used properly. Maybe they should only be applied by a licenced lawn care professional?
I personally use pesticides on my lawn but only when they are actually needed and instead of broadcasting it over the entire lawn I just spot treat where it is need. I doubt this approach is causing me or the surrounding area any adverse health or environmental effects.
The ban will exclude farmers and golf courses. I find it ridiculous that the food that you eat can have pesticide residues on it but your lawn cannot. Then to allow golf courses, the biggest pesticide user of them all, to be excluded is just baffling to me. Most golf courses are right in the city backing onto peoples yards as well as usually being in a lake/river/stream setting.
